This tour, exploring some less famous locations, but favorites of ours, begins with a spectacular drive south around Lake Wakatipu to sleepy Kingston, once a bustling railhead and port with great views north toward Queenstown and a close-up look at the Kingston Flyer steam train. We carry on south to Fairlight, the only remaining station on the old rail line then following the Mataura River to where it rises in the Eyre Mountains. Finally we climb the Slate Range to the old Garston Ski Hut where we gain amazing views across the Eyre Mountains, Centre Dome and Southland.

This tour takes you to the high country. An alpine plain of tussock covered hills rolls away to the north and east studded with monumental tors of weathered schist. We explore the old Garston ski hut with it's amazing vistas of Southland, the Eyre Mountains and the Takitimu Range in the distance. The journey there winds around the edge of Lake Wakatipu stopping at rocky bluffs and shady coves for far flung views, stopping at tiny Kingston, once a bustling railhead and port, to look at the Kingston Flyer steam train, a relic of a glorious past, before climbing to our destination.
