South to Kingston Into Alpine Back Country

BOOK A TOUR or view other destinations

  • Our half day tour gives you 4-5 hours to explore and capture some less famous locations, but favorites of ours, beginning with a spectacular drive south around Lake Wakatipu to sleepy Kingston, once a bustling railhead and port with great views north toward Queenstown and a close-up look at the Kingston Flyer steam train. The winding road hugs the base of The Remarkables Range and winds around the shores of Lake Wakatipu. It's one of the great drives with spectacular views of the lake and vistas of the Eyre Mountains.

Our route on the day will be determined by group preferences, weather and light conditions.

    4-5 HR TOUR

  • With a full day we have 8-9 hours to explore off the beaten track, starting with a spectacular drive south around Lake Wakatipu to sleepy Kingston, once a bustling railhead and port with great views north toward Queenstown and a close-up look at the Kingston Flyer steam train. We carry on south to Fairlight, the only remaining station on the old rail line, then follow the Mataura River to where it rises in the Eyre Mountains. Finally we climb 800m up the Slate Range to the old Garston Ski Hut where we gain amazing views across the Eyre Mountains, Centre Dome and Southland.

Our route on the day will be determined by group preferences, weather and light conditions.

One Direction, So Much to Photograph

WITH SUCH VARIED LANDSCAPES WITHIN ONE OR HOURS DRIVE FROM QUEEENSTOWN,
TOURS WORK BEST WHEN EACH EXPLORES A SINGLE DIRECTION.

This page is designed to inspire you with some of the sights you may see when we choose to travel south to Kingston and beyond. Half day tours will take us to Kingston, exploring sites along the way. Full days allow us to take more time and head beyond Kingston, up into the high alpine country of the Nevis Valley.

How far we travel also depends on whether we stop frequently to take lots of shots or whether we pick fewer locations and explore creative options at each site. Our tour takes you to the places we know best and love most. We love sharing these special locations with you because they are different every tome we go. This page should give you an idea of what there is to see in this direction.

With so many options in this direction, tell us what interests you most. We'll discuss at the start of the tour, taking your photography experience and interestes, your equipment, light and weather conditions into account to design a great day's photography.
